Venice History
Venice was undeveloped swamp marsh until developer Abbot Kinney created canals inspired by Venice, Italy. He named his project Venice of America and opened July 4th, 1905. There are still a few canals left South of Venice Blvd. and West of Lincoln surrounded by large multi-million dollar homes. (Want more info on homes in Venice? Send me an email. I will provide you with a list of homes Kristine@360Realty.com.)
We were recently showing luxury condos to clients of ours from the east coast. Our client was in Venice during World War II. He remembered the canals of Venice and said that none of his friends believed him. He was excited to re-visit and see the canals again.
Unfortunately, there are no canals on Abbot Kinney Boulevard today. But, there are lots of businesses owned and operated by members of the community. Tourists come from all over to shop at the specialty boutiques. There are no chain businesses allowed to operate on Abbot Kinney.
Kristine lived in Venice a few years after the Los Angeles riots happened. At this time there were a number of gangs mainly at night. It was thought of as a rough place to live. People were shocked when she said that she lived in Venice. At that time Abbot Kinney was a well kept secret since it was a few blocks from the beach. It was a great hang out for locals. Fortunately, her favorite pizza place is still there Abbot’s Pizza Co. ran by two brothers. Stop by and ask for Rich he’s one of the brothers and ask him about Abbot Kinney when he first opened his place.
Venice is a very desirable community due to the urban, artistic feel. Abbot Kinney has restaurants and shops that create an entertaining environment day or night.
